Standard Closing Above Ground Pool
Pool
Closings
The Basic
Function of our Pool Closing Service is to protect your pool equipment,
plumbing and water quality during the harsh winter months we experience on the
East Coast. The process starts with
lowering the water level in your swimming pool.
This serves two functions: 1) Too ensure proper winterization of skimmer
housing and 2) to introduce fresh water to pool and prevent chemistry problems
in the future. In some cases where there
is a high water table, a pool can be properly winterized without lowering water
level but we strongly recommend it be done professionally.
The next
step is to drain all equipment of any water, (Filters, Pump(s), Heaters and
other accessories) prep equipment and
plumbing to be blown out for the winter.
We than attach a turbine blower (not a compressor) which blows air in
volume, not pressure to evacuate all water from equipment and plumbing, above
and below frost line, while air is being forced through plumbing we insert
rubber expansion plugs into skimmers and return line to ensure they do not
freeze and burst over the winter. Once
all plumbing and equipment is free of water we address the pool water by adding
3 to 5 gallons of liquid chlorine shock (depending on pool size), and 1 gallon
of winterizing/algaecide. This is an
adequate amount of chemical for most pools with any type of sound winter
cover. Pools with Mesh Covers will need
extra chemicals at closing and pre freeze and post freeze to protect
water. These extra measures can be
discussed with your pool tech before or during closing. The Final step involving chemicals is to make
sure skimmer is dry and plugged and then add ¾ of a gallon of 50 or 60
antifreeze into each skimmer housing.
This will prevent rain water that gets into skimmer and pool from
freezing into anything harder than slush and protect skimmer housing. Finally with the ¼ gallon of antifreeze left
in bottle . . . replace cap loosely, and drop into skimmer inverted (upside
down) this is an extra measure in case antifreeze in skimmer should get diluted
and freeze, Ice would crush bottle and not skimmer housing.
The last and
final step is to remove all ladder, handrails and diving board from pool and
install the winter cover, whether light weight with water bags or a solid or
mesh safety cover. In cases where covers
are sound and need to be pumped off over the winter, we recommend pumping water
from cover anytime 6” to 12” of water accumulate by following all of the above
steps, you can be sure your pool will open up clean, clear and free of
expensive equipment and plumbing repairs in the spring.
